Title: The territorial expansion as a motivating factor if the restructuring of the spanish financial system: the case if saving banks and 
	credit cooperatives
Abstract: La actual crisis financiera internacional está actuando como catalizador de un profundo proceso de cambio en el sector bancario 
	español que está afectando también a las entidades de crédito de la Economía Social: cajas de ahorros y cooperativas de crédito. Su 
	modelo de banca “minorista”, centrada en la cercanía al cliente, se ha visto acompañado en los últimos años de un fuerte proceso de 
	expansión geográfica que ha supuesto un sobredimensionamiento de su red de sucursales. Sin embargo, como consecuencia de las 
	actuales circunstancias de la economía española en general, y del sistema bancario en particular, dicha estrategia de desarrollo 
	interno no parece sostenible, siendo necesario que se produzca un redimensionamiento del sector, para ver recuperada la confianza 
	en el sistema y para que éste vuelva a ser considerado como uno de los más solventes del mundo.
	Bajo este enfoque, el objetivo de este trabajo es analizar las distintas estrategias de expansión territorial desarrolladas por 
	dichas entidades con el objetivo de plasmar su situación actual y comprender por qué es necesaria la reestructuración del sector.
	Para ello se ha empleado tanto el análisis descriptivo como el multivariante, utilizando en todo momento los datos que presentan la 
	Confederación Española de Cajas de Ahorros (CECA) y la Unión Nacional de Cooperativas de Crédito (UNACC) en sus anuarios 
	estadísticos.
Abstract: The current financial international crisis is acting as catalyst of a deep process of change in the Spanish banking sector which 
	is affecting also the credit institutions of the Social Economy: saving banks and credit cooperatives. These entities share a model 
	of "retail" banking, centered on the nearness to the client, that has been accompanied in the last years of a strong process of 
	geographical expansion which has supposed an oversizing of its network of branches. Nevertheless, as a consequence of the current 
	circumstances of the Spanish economy in general, and of the bank system especially, the above mentioned strategy of internal 
	development does not seem to be sustainable, being necessary that a resizing of the sector takes place, to see the confidence 
	recovered in the system and in order to be considered again of the most solvent of the world.
 Considering that, the aim of this 
	investigation is to analyze the different strategies of territorial expansion developed by the above mentioned entities with the 
	aim to know its current situation and to understand why the restructuring of the sector is necessary.
 For it there has been used 
	both the descriptive and econometric analysis, using the information that present the Spanish Federation of Savings banks (CECA) 
	and the National Union of Credit cooperatives (UNACC) in his statistical yearbooks.
