Title: Saving bank and credit co-operatives faced with the crisis: the changes in their localization and performance
Abstract: El artículo estudia el impacto que la crisis económica y financiera está teniendo en las entidades bancarias de carácter 
	social, en especial en sus estrategias de financiación y de localización territorial.
	En primer lugar, se analizan las crecientes necesidades de financiación de la economía española durante el pasado ciclo 
	expansivo y el decisivo papel de las instituciones financieras en la canalización del ahorro externo. Posteriormente, se 
	analiza la evolución de la presencia territorial de las cajas de ahorro y de las cooperativas de crédito, así como la 
	distribución de sus operaciones activas y pasivas. El análisis se realiza diferenciando dos períodos, uno desde el inicio 
	de los noventa hasta el verano de 2007, momento en el que se inicia la crisis, y un segundo período, desde el cuarto 
	trimestre de 2007 hasta la actualidad.
Abstract: This paper examines the impact that the international economic and financial crisis is having on the behaviour of 
	Spanish social banking institutions, particularly in their funding and localization strategies.
 First of all, we analyse 
	the growing net borrowing of the Spanish economy in the former economic expansion cycle and how the national financial 
	institutions were the primary source of foreign financing. Secondly, we analyse the evolution of territorial localization 
	of saving banks and credit co-operatives, and of their lending and borrowing transactions. In this analysis we are going 
	to difference two periods: since the beginning of nineties until August 2007, the start of the international financial, 
	and a second period since the fourth quarter 2007 until now.
